
Directed Health Measures
Your safety and well-being are Nebraska Health Care Association’s (NHCA) top priority. The event will follow Lincoln-Lancaster County Health Department directed health measures (DHMs) in place at the time the course is held. NHCA will update registrants of the most current DHMs as the event date approaches.
Content
Whether you are a nurse aide, medication aide, licensed health care professional, dietary aide, administrator, or environmental services team member, training on identifying and responding to the mental health needs of residents is an integral part of providing quality care. Direct care staff spend a significant amount of time with residents, exposing them to a variety of mental health needs. This program will provide direct care staff with the tools to identify mental health conditions, incorporate appropriate responses to crisis scenarios, and develop increased compassion for individuals with mental health concerns. The goal of this training is to enhance direct care staff’s confidence of caring for residents with mental health concerns.
Objectives
At the completion of the program, participants will be able to:
- Identify the most common mental health concern of elderly residents.
- Explain the effects of substance abuse.
- Utilize an appropriate response to a resident expressing suicidal thoughts.
- Demonstrate an appropriate response to aggressive behavior.
- List two behavioral interventions.
- Outline a plan for their own self-care.

This program is appropriate for all staff in nursing facilities and assisted living communities.

Format
Registrants will have the option to attend in-person or virtually. Each attendee will designate in-person or virtual format during registration. Registrants must attend in the format in which they are registered. Lunch will be provided.
Continuing Education Credit
This program meets the continuing competency requirements for 6 hours for administrators in nursing facilities and assisted living communities. This program meets the continuing competency requirements for 6 hours for nurses.

Handouts will be available online. Registrants will receive a link to the handouts prior to the program.
Evaluations
Please provide your feedback on the course by completing the evaluation. A link to the online evaluation will be emailed to registrants.
Virtual Attendees
Registrants will be emailed a link to the training after registration. NHCA uses ZOOM as the webinar platform. You may participate from any computer and most mobile devices that have internet access. However, to receive full credit, you must be logged into the ZOOM app through your computer or mobile device. Visit https://zoom.us/test to test if your computer is ready for a ZOOM session and to download the latest application. The audio portion of this webinar is run through the computer rather than a phone line. A computer with external speakers or headset is needed; a microphone and/or webcam is required.
