The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic continues to remind us of the importance of a high-quality workforce to care for Nebraska’s most vulnerable. Today, there is a demand for approximately 2.3 million direct care workers in long-term care. By 2030, that number is estimated to increase to 3.4 million.
Nebraska Health Care Foundation (NHCF) works to support Nebraska’s careers in caring by distributing annual scholarships to those continuing their education in long-term care, including medication aides, basic nursing assistants, assisted living administrators, nursing home administrators, activity directors, dietary staff, social service designees, registered nurses, and licensed practical nurses.
In response to Nebraska’s 2019 floods and the COVID-19 pandemic, NHCF created an emergency support fund to respond to the needs of Nebraska’s long-term care community in the wake of an emergency event. In the last year, NHCF partnered with the Nebraska Health Care Association to secure and distribute more than 182,900 medical and non-medical masks, 37,000 gloves, 13,650 face shields, 10,150 KN95 or N95 masks, 5,250 gowns, 4,000 shoe coverings, and 3,650 gallons of hand sanitizer.
Kicking off during Careers in Aging Week and continuing throughout the 2021 Nebraska Nursing Facility Association-Nebraska Assisted Living Association Spring Virtual Convention, this fundraiser will celebrate, uplift, and support caregivers and other health care workers who improve the lives of millions of seniors daily.
